This biography, about growing up in nearby Kellyville in the 80s and 90s, was both familiar and foreign. A time and place, and many childhood experiences, so like my own but seen from a different viewpoint. A touching illustration of just how damaging a casual tolerance of bullying and racism can be. A challenging but worthwhile read.

Witty and familiar, this modern day novel of a family life in Sydney is entertaining and real. Light hearted but insightful, with great characters, I enjoyed it so much more than I expected to!

Follow quirky scientist Douglas and his artistic wife Connie through all the ups and downs of modern family life. Eloquent and insightful; full of those moments when you know an author has captured an experience or a feeling just perfectly. A fantastic read.

How do you cope when the children you are given are nothing like the children you dreamed of? Andrew Solomon interviews over 300 families and examines just how amazing humanity is at adapting to the unexpected in life. Possibly the most influential book I’ve ever read.

The body of a high school senior is discovered in the woods of a small town. The discovery upends this uneventful small town, as police grapple with a rare homicide case. The novel shows insight into the lives of several characters and how they are all strangely connected to this unfortunate murder. The novel is more dramatic than suspenseful but still a great read!

I don’t usually read sci-fi but I’m glad I read this story about intergalactic missionary work! It’s the story of a lone missionary and his developing relationship with the inhabitants of the planet Oasis, his co-workers at the station who are working on settling the planet in a peaceful and sustainable way, and with his wife, who is still on Earth and coping with domestic and international disasters as well as pregnancy. Unusual and absorbing!
